EARTHQUAKE IN VENEZUELA: CHILDREN NEED PROTECTION

On 24 June 2026, as families across Venezuela were celebrating the country’s National Day, two powerful earthquakes struck within just 40 seconds. Measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, they were the strongest earthquakes to hit Venezuela in more than 125 years. Dozens of buildings have collapsed in Caracas, with the neighbourhoods of Los Palos Grandes and Altamira among the hardest hit. Rescue teams are still searching for people trapped beneath the rubble. The full scale of the disaster is not yet known.

Our Country Director, Fatima Andraca, explains what this means for children: “Some have lost their homes. Ongoing aftershocks continue to terrify them. Some children may have been separated from their families. We know from experience that children urgently need protection, food, clean water and medical care.”
