Two massive earthquakes struck Venezuela within seconds of each other yesterday evening. Dozens of buildings have collapsed and rescuers are searching for people trapped beneath the rubble. The number of casualties is still unclear and continues to rise.

Earthquakes in Venezuela

The double earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, are the strongest to hit Venezuela in more than 125 years. They struck the region west of the capital, Caracas, particularly hard, forcing thousands of children and their families from their homes.

Children are among the most vulnerable after these earthquakes. Save the Children is assessing the situation on the ground and working with local partners to understand urgent needs and support affected families as quickly as possible.

“We know from experience that children urgently need access to shelter, food, water and healthcare,” said Fatima Andraca, Country Director for Save the Children in Venezuela.

Some children have lost their homes. Aftershocks are continuing, causing further fear for children. Some may have been separated from their families in the chaos.
