Saving children’s lives in emergencies

In crises such as in Gaza, Sudan, Yemen or Ukraine, children are injured, newborn babies are delivered without medical care, and preventable illnesses become life-threatening. Clinics are destroyed, essential medicines cannot get through, families flee to overcrowded emergency shelters – often without access to clean water or basic services.

When healthcare systems collapse, rapid humanitarian aid is essential. This is exactly where Save the Children steps in. And you make this aid possible.

Around 1 in 5 children globally is displaced or living in a conflict zone.

Donate now

When families lose everything, we are ready to act. Thanks to you.

When disaster strikes and healthcare services have been destroyed, our Emergency Health Unit is already on its way: doctors, nurses, midwives and crisis specialists are ready for the toughest deployments. Thanks to your donation.

The Emergency Health Unit is designed to respond anywhere, at any time, by getting the right people to the right places. We go where others cannot reach, and help where children are affected most. And we stay the course: once the acute phase has passed, we support reconstruction, train health workers and strengthen local systems so care can continue.

In 2024, Save the Children responded to 112 crises in 58 countries.

Manal’s story

Help after the explosion

Manal was 18 months old when she picked up an unexploded shell in Taiz, Yemen. The explosion badly injured her hand. Save the Children transferred her to a specialist hospital and funded two operations. Her father says: «We thought she was dead.»

Questions and answers

In acute emergencies, we respond immediately. How quickly we can reach children depends on access and the security situation. Because we work with local partners and health authorities, we can often provide rapid support.

We support healthcare services, deliver medical supplies, strengthen vaccination and nutrition programmes, provide neonatal care, offer psychosocial support and help contain disease outbreaks.

It will be used wherever children need it most urgently – this includes medicines, mobile health services, vaccinations, maternity care and protection from disease. Save the Children Switzerland is Zewo certified and is therefore committed to transparency and the audited use of funds.
