A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck Myanmar on Friday. The epicentre was located near the megacity of Mandalay, in the central part of Myanmar. The tremors were felt as far away as Bangkok, where high-rise buildings were evacuated. The full extent of the damage remains unclear. Save the Children is on the ground and preparing to launch an emergency response.

The extent of the earthquake damage is still unclear, but we know that children are the most vulnerable after a disaster.

Jeremy Stoner Regional Director for Asia

The earthquake was felt in many parts of Myanmar, including major cities such as Yangon and Mandalay, as well as in Thailand and other parts of the region. The earthquake impacted at least six regions and states, home to over 28 million people, including an estimated 6.7 million children.

Initial reports suggest people have been killed and injured, and cities across the country have suffered significant damage. Many are feared to be trapped under the rubble. Blocked roads and damaged communication lines make it difficult to verify the full extent.
